SERIES
THE BIRDS ARE WATCHING
The Birds Are Watching asks viewers to pay attention from the vantage point of local bird species, in hopes of establishing a sense of interconnectedness between all beings. As birds become threatened, endangered and disappear altogether, do we notice? Do we recognize our role in these changes?” The paintings in this series have all been created on cardboard and old book pages, turning recycled materials into canvases. |
HERE I AM
Birds can be visible or invisible. They can blend into the background or their beauty can strike you. You can hear their songs, be in awe, or not even notice they are there. Yet they are present. They are strong and fragile at the same time. They survive. Symbolically they represent hope. My "Here I Am" paintings are all mixed media on cardboard. Working on cardboard represents the transient nature of life as well as both the internal (carving in) and external (adding on top) forces upon all of us. |
TRAPPED IN THE GREY
I love how creativity strikes. Walking in Central Park, reflecting on a conversation with my daughters, feeling frustrated by not being able to communicate my emotions clearly, my insides hurt. I felt trapped in recognizing nothing in life is simple. Suddenly a new series was born. It was clear in my mind. Starting with black on one side and white on the other, I would write my emotions onto the canvas. Shards of plexiglass would be added to the top to allow the viewer to see their reflection in the grey – we can all get trapped. It, of course, was not that simple. But the muse had struck. |
SHADOW SIDE
All things are comprised of light and dark, brightness and shadows. “Shadow Side” seeks to explore the push and pull of these opposites. Simple objects become objects showcasing the internal dialogues of light and dark we all experience. We live in a throwaway society. Where is away? We want instant gratification. At what expense? We are inundated with information. When do we stop listening? These are questions that must be asked. To truly see, we must listen to, accept and be confronted by both the dark and the light. This series pushes the viewer to see deeper than the surface of an object and confront the complexity that is around us. |
